A Milestone of Growth: Building Student Success at iQ Academy
Student success at IQ Academy of California–Los Angeles (iQLA) is defined by growth, perseverance, and achievement. The school has made measurable progress over the past five years in graduation rates, attendance, and student engagement while strengthening the systems that help students stay on track to graduate. These improvements reflect the work of educators, counselors, students, and families who share a commitment to student success.
Behind every percentage point is a student who stayed on track, a counselor who stepped in at the right moment, and a family who felt supported throughout the journey.
A Commitment to Student Achievement
iQLA has focused on strengthening the systems that help students reach graduation over the past five years.
Graduation rates increased by 29.2 percent. Dropout rates declined by 29.7 percent. Chronic absenteeism dropped by 12.4 percent, and overall attendance rose by 3.16 percent. English Learner progress improved by 8.6 percent.
Head of School Nick Stecken attributes those numbers to intentional work and structured support.
“Our goal has always been to make sure every student feels supported with a clear path to graduation,” he says. “We monitor progress closely, provide academic interventions when needed, and ensure families understand the support available to them.”
Supporting Students Every Step of the Way
These improvements reflect the school’s continued focus and investment in the programs and support systems that help students succeed.
Expanded credit recovery options help students stay on pace toward graduation. High school seniors receive proactive and personalized support to help ensure graduation requirements are well understood and completed on time. Guidance counselors regularly check in with students to review progress, set goals, and address challenges early.
This consistent communication helps students and families stay connected to the school community.
“Students are more likely to stay engaged when they feel seen and supported,” says Mr. Stecken. “We are proud of the systems we have built to make sure no student falls behind.”
Strengthening Engagement and Attendance
Engagement is an important part of iQLA’s approach. Teachers and staff monitor attendance and academic progress closely, so they can step in early if students need additional support.
This focus has contributed to steady improvements in attendance and a meaningful reduction in absenteeism.
“Our team works hard to create a learning environment where students are accountable, motivated, and connected,” Stecken explains. “When engagement improves, academic outcomes follow.”
Investing in Every Student’s Success
iQLA strengthened support for multilingual learners through thoughtful instruction and coordinated academic planning. Teachers regularly review student performance and adjust their approach to meet student needs and ensure each student is building confidence and mastering new skills.
“Our English Learner students are an important part of our community. Clear expectations, consistent communication, and individualized support help ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed academically,” Mr. Stecken explains.
Looking Ahead
The progress at iQLA reflects years of effort to strengthen academic programs, expand support services, and ensure students have the resources they need to graduate.
Progress is not measured by a single milestone at iQ Academy. It is built year after year through partnership with families, meaningful connections with students, and a shared commitment to helping every learner succeed.
